About Derek Matheson, D.O.
Derek Matheson, D.O., specializes in internal medicine at Utica Park Clinic. His professional areas of interest include advanced lung and cardiovascular disease.
Over the past 20 years, Dr. Matheson’s practice has focused on the most complicated and sickest patients. He understands what it takes to get his patients on the path to recovery, and oftentimes it starts with compassion and transparency. “I will see patients as frequently and as often as we need to improve their conditions. My hope is that they know how I am willing to work for them to get better,” he said.
Dr. Matheson’s inspiration for pursuing a career in medicine began with his father. He said, “My father was a physiology teacher. On road trips, I was learning advanced physiology at a young age. I went to undergraduate with the sole purpose of becoming a physician.”
Once Dr. Matheson completed his education and training, he decided to specialize in internal medicine. He said it provided him with the continuous opportunity to evolve and have a broader perspective. “It allows a provider to keep learning their entire career,” he added.
Dr. Matheson wants to note that he not only enjoys helping people heal through medicine but also with humor. A few dad jokes may be heard!
When Dr. Matheson isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his family. He adds, “I am the father of four girls and a boy. When not working, I try to give my wife as much of a break as possible, driving them from one event to another.”
