Bone density scan
Osteoporosis is a major health concern for all women, and one in three will develop osteoporosis without medical intervention. However, bone densitometry scans, or DEXA scans, provide a quick, easy assessment of bone density in the spine, hip and other skeletal sites. The trained physicians at Hillcrest Hospital Cushing evaluate bone density levels to identify and reduce the risk of fracture caused by osteoporosis in an early stage. Low radiation scans hone in on the most critical areas, and computer software provides a comparative analysis to determine skeletal system health and to evaluate the patient’s response to treatment.
Before undergoing a DEXA scan, patients should ensure they have not taken calcium supplements for at least 24 hours. The procedure is non-invasive and painless, typically lasting about 10 to 30 minutes. During the scan, patients lie on a table while a low-dose X-ray machine measures the density of bones in areas like the hip and spine. This test helps doctors assess the risk of fractures and monitor the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatments.
For residents in the Cushing area seeking this important health service, our hospital offers state-of-the-art bone density testing tailored to your individual needs. Call us for more information. Please note that this test requires a physician’s order.
Breast imaging
Our breast imaging department includes an American College of Radiology-accredited and FDA-certified mammography program offering screening and diagnostic mammography. Breast sonography for correlation with mammography is also available, as well as various breast biopsy options for our patients to consider.
Our breast imaging services range from an open surgical procedure to new minimally invasive techniques. Mammographic or sonographic guided localizations are also performed to help guide the surgeon to the area of interest should open surgical biopsy be the best option. Talk with your doctor to determine the procedure that is best for you.

We also provide studies that offer ultrasound evaluation of the carotid arteries in the neck as well as arterial and/or venous evaluation of the upper extremities or lower extremities. To learn more about our cardiology services, click here.
CT scans
Enhanced and unenhanced CT scans are performed daily. These scans study the inner workings of your body, allowing physicians to visualize a wide range of body systems.
Potential sites for CT scans include:
- Abdomen and pelvis
- Bones and blood vessels
- Brain/head
- Chest
- Digestive tract
- Inner ear
- Liver
- Pituitary gland
- Sinus

We also offer CT angiography, which combines CT imaging with a contrast dye to create detailed pictures of blood vessels.
Lung cancer screening
If you are a smoker, have been a smoker in the past, or live with a smoker, then the threat of lung cancer has likely crossed your mind. For most, it’s a concern that leaves many unsure of where to turn.
At Hillcrest Hospital Claremore, we are prepared to address your lung cancer worries. The Lung Center at Hillcrest Hospital Claremore offers a nurse navigator who can guide you through a lung cancer screening. First, patients should visit LungExam.com to determine if they are a candidate for a lung cancer screening. This website will also provide other details of your potential screening, including how much it will cost and whether your insurance will cover it.
To schedule a lung cancer diagnostic test or other pulmonary screenings, please obtain a referral from your primary care provider. We also offer self-referrals for patients who meet the criteria for a lung cancer screening. You can determine if you qualify for a self-referral by visiting LungExam.com.
About our lung cancer screenings
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends annual lung cancer screenings for people who:
- Are between 50 and 80 years old
- Are a current or former smoker or people who have quit within the past 15 years
- Have a minimum of a 20 pack-year history (e.g., smoked 1 pack per day for 20 years or 2 packs per day for 10 years)
- Have no symptoms of lung cancer
Our lung cancer screenings use low-dose computerized tomography (LDCT) scans to get a clear view of your lungs. During your lung screening, you will lie on a table while the CT machine uses low dose radiation to make detailed images of your lungs. The scan is painless and only takes a few minutes.
Where to get a lung cancer screening
Pulmonary health check-ups are a vital part of early lung cancer detection. We offer lung disease screenings at the following locations:
- Bailey Medical Center
- Hillcrest Hospital Claremore
- Hillcrest Hospital Cushing
- Hillcrest Hospital Pryor
- Hillcrest Hospital South
- Hillcrest Medical Center
We also offer deep lung biopsies at Hillcrest Medical Center. This procedure is for patients who need a biopsy deep within their lungs. For more information, please visit Hillcrest Medical Center’s Lung Center page.
MRI
Instead of using x-rays, MRI uses a powerful magnetic field and radio frequency waves. Many changes in tissue can be evaluated by MRI. This information will give the doctors valuable information that is not available by other diagnostic tests.
The body is made up of atoms, and these atoms have a magnetic charge. When the body is placed in a strong magnetic field, your atoms tend to line up with the magnetic field. Radio waves (similar to those used for TV) are then sent into the body, which alters the alignment of the atoms. When the radio waves are stopped, the atoms generate a weak radio signal that the machine detects. These radio signals are then put into a computer, and the result is an image that looks like the body’s anatomy.
Nuclear medicine
Our radiologists provide a diverse range of nuclear medicine procedures, including:
- Bone scans
- Hepatobiliary scans
- Lung scans
- Nuclear cardiology
- Thyroid uptake scans
Our radiology department also offers various radiography tests and procedures, routine X-rays, and orthopedic screenings like bone surveys and extremity exams. Interpretation services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure you receive accurate results in a timely manner.
In addition, the imaging department works closely with the emergency department, surgical services, and other departments within the hospital to guarantee you receive a complete continuum of care for your personal health needs.

Sophisticated scanning technology
Hillcrest Pryor’s nuclear medicine technologists utilize advanced technology that delivers results quickly so doctors can begin treatment as soon as possible. We offer a wide range of diagnostic imaging services, including:
- Brain scans
- Heart scans, including myocardial perfusion scans
- Red cell mass studies, to diagnose blood diseases or evaluate blood loss
- Renal scans, to examine kidney function
- Thyroid uptake scans
- Tumor imaging
- Whole-body bone scans
Ultrasounds
Ultrasounds (or sonography) use reflected sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues, including muscles, blood vessels and organs. Because sound waves are used, there is no radiation exposure during this procedure. Although most commonly used to examine the fetus during pregnancy, it is also an effective tool for monitoring blood flow using Doppler ultrasound technology. Additionally, ultrasounds can be used to discover abnormalities in organs, and detect narrowed arteries, clotted veins, or growths such as tumors and cysts.
We offer the following ultrasound services:
- Assisted ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies
- Breast ultrasound
- Gallbladder, right upper quadrant ultrasound
- Obstetrical ultrasound
- Pelvic, transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound
- Renal ultrasound
- Scrotum/testicle ultrasound
- Ultrasound of the abdomen, including the liver, pancreas, and spleen
- Ultrasound for extremity masses/soft tissue
X-rays
X-rays use invisible electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones and organs on digital media. Standard X-rays are performed for many reasons, including diagnosing tumors or bone injuries. X-ray technology is used in many types of diagnostic procedures, such as arthrograms, CT scans and fluoroscopy.
During an X-ray, different parts of the body allow varying amounts of X-ray beams to pass through: Soft tissues in the body (such as blood, skin, fat and muscle) allow most of the X-ray to pass through and appear dark gray on the film or digital media.
A bone or a tumor, which is denser than soft tissue, allows only a few of the X-rays to pass through and appears white on the X-ray. At a break in a bone, the X-ray beam passes through the broken area and appears as a dark line in the white bone.
