Issam Alawin, M.D.
Issam Alawin, M.D., practices medical oncology (cancer care) and has been in health care since 2007. He chose to focus on oncology after a rotation in medical school. “During my internal medicine training, I rotated through a few different specialties,” he said. “I found out oncology was my calling. I was a good fit because cancer patients need a doctor who listens, and I am excellent at that.”
When treating patients, Dr. Alawin stresses the importance of building relationships. “Cancer care is a long-term relationship,” he said. “It is a journey where oncologists are the tour guides. We need to educate so our patients can make well-informed decisions. Knowledge is power and power leads to trust and confidence.”
When teaching patients how to stay healthy, Dr. Alawin’s advice is customized to each patient and based on where they are in their cancer journey. “If the patient is newly diagnosed, I do not want to overwhelm them with a lot of instructions,” he said. “I usually focus on the routine precautions to be taken while receiving chemotherapy. For example, if they are on hormonal therapy, we usually need to involve physical therapy to help address fatigue. On the other hand, if they are about to have surgery, we need to make sure their nutrition is at its best so they can heal faster. If they are in the surveillance phase, we shift attention to cancer prevention and screening.”
Dr. Alawin received a Bachelor of Medicine degree from the University of Jordan School of Medicine in Amman, Jordan in 2007. He completed a general practice internship at Zarqa Governmental Hospital in Zarqa, Jordan in 2008. He completed an internal medicine residency at King Hussein Cancer Center in Amman, Jordan in 2010. He completed internal medicine and oncology residencies at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 2013 and 2015, respectively. Prior to joining Utica Park Clinic, Dr. Alawin worked at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa.
When he is away from the office, Dr. Alawin enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters.
Dr. Alawin welcomes new patients and accepts most insurance plans. He practices on the Hillcrest Medical Center campus at:

I was so impressed with Dr. Alawin's demeanor and knowledge. On my first encounter he had already researched my previous medical history and discussed with me my concerns, in a calm and unrushed manor. While I do have some blood issues he explained that they are not of immediate concern and my fatigue and dizziness were more likely from overmedication of blood pressure medicines. He decreased my dosages and within a week the fatigue and dizziness were gone. In my 76 years, I have seen many doctors and had many operations and procedures, good and bad, but my experience with Dr. Alawin was the best encounter ever. I highly recommend Dr. Alawin and look forward to my future visits as he monitors my true condition rather than the one I (and my PCP) had perceived.
