Specialty

Pain Management

Andrew Barker, M.D., is board certified in pain medicine. “I believe that chronic pain control is most effectively achieved with a multi-modal approach,” he explains. “The primary goal of interventional pain management is not necessarily to eliminate pain entirely, but to restore function. Interventional treatments, medications, physical therapy and surgical options should be tailored to a patient's specific disease process. I firmly believe that opioid medications should only be used in rare circumstances and are most appropriately considered as an option of last resort.”

While Dr. Barker welcomes the opportunity to assist you with any form of pain management, the large majority of pain that he treats is related to spine or other musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis or muscular pain. Patient comments about him include:

"Dr. Barker listened closely, studied and looked at me when talking. I felt like I was valued!"

Dr. Barker chose to enter the field of pain management for personal reasons. “Like so many others, my family has been significantly impacted by chronic pain,” he explains. “Based on my family's experience, I believe that there is room for improvement in the way we manage pain and I want to be part of that solution.”

Dr. Barker encourages his patients to stay active and take an active role in their health. “When someone experiences pain, it is common for them to limit activities that cause any degree of discomfort,” he says. “But deconditioning occurs rapidly and once it happens, there is a very long journey to regaining those abilities.”

Prior to joining Utica Park Clinic, Dr. Barker cared for patients at Saint Francis Hospital and Warren Clinic in Tulsa and at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.

Dr. Barker graduated summa cum laude from Oklahoma Christian University in 2005 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He earned his medical degree in 2009 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, KS. He completed his anesthesiology residency in 2013 and completed his interventional pain management fellowship in 2014, both at Texas A&M Scott and White Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Barker is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the Oklahoma Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

His personal interests include involvement with his church and being a husband and father. He also enjoys playing the guitar and following Kansas Jayhawk basketball.
