Oncology

Jehanzeb Riaz, M.D., practices medical oncology (cancer care) and has been in health care since 2004. “My goal is to empower cancer patients with the knowledge they need to make the best decisions for themselves,” he said. “I focus on helping people understand their disease, challenges and treatment options to maximize their chance to beat the cancer, prolong survival and improve quality of life.”

Dr. Riaz chose to focus on medical oncology because it requires creative thinking and planning to create the right treatment plan for each person. “It is very important that the patient is treated respectfully and ultimately, is given a feeling of empowerment. I provide that by listening and responding to their questions and making them feel at ease,” he said. “One of the best feelings that I have had in my clinical experience has been when a patient or family member expresses their gratitude for taking the time to listen to their questions.”

Dr. Riaz treats all common cancers such as breast, lung, colon, prostate, kidney, bladder, head and neck, brain tumors, melanoma and other skin cancers, thyroid, sarcomas, lymphomas and multiple myeloma.

When teaching patients how to get healthy, Dr. Riaz suggests taking small steps towards a goal. “Little actions in our daily life amount to big benefits down the road,” he said. “Eating healthy, daily exercise and refraining from toxins like tobacco will not only keep you healthy in general, but also protect you from cancer.”

Dr. Riaz received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan in 2000. He received a Bachelor of Medicine degree and a Bachelor of Surgery degree from University of Health Sciences / Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan in 2004. He completed a residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine/ Jersey City Medical Center in New Jersey in 2011. He completed a fellowship at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas in 2016. Prior to joining Utica Park Clinic, Dr. Riaz worked at Joe Arrington Cancer Center in Lubbock, Texas. He is fluent in Hindi and Urdu.

When he is away from the office, Dr. Riaz enjoys creating educational videos for patients, reading books, exercising and spending time with his two sons.

Dr. Riaz welcomes new patients and accepts most insurance plans. He practices on the Hillcrest Medical Center campus at:

I was referred to Dr Riaz for an iron deficiency. My appointment was at 2:15pm and I was asked to arrive early to complete the new patient forms. I arrived just before 2:00. At 2:00 I was called back by the nurse for BP, temp, etc. At 2:10 Dr Raíz came in. Never have I ever had a Dr that kept the appointment time much less see me early. I was also impressed with his bedside manner.

In 2018, had a sudden Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma diagnosis and was referred to Dr. Riaz (AKA the Wizard of AZ) Dr. Riaz was a consummate professional from our initial consultation to his support through 6 months of in-patient R-EPOCH Chemo. Thanks Dr. Riaz for your excellent care, empathy, and friendship. You (literally) saved my life!

My father has been receiving on-going treatment by Dr. Riaz for NHL and has received excellent, professional, and friendly care from Dr. Riaz and the wonderful nurses (Pixie, Audra, Erica!). My father mostly receives care out of the Nor-Lea Cancer Center in Lovington, NM, but he's had to go to the Lubbock office a couple of times and care there was very good too. My family is so grateful for Dr. Riaz. He is very patient-centric and we have greatly appreciated his calm demeanor and expertise.
