Have you ever been a smoker?

Smoking can cause lung cancer. This much we know. There is a screening that might be right for you.

Get Screened for Lung Cancer Today

Smoking can cause lung cancer. What many people don’t realize is that there is a simple screening that could save lives– and might be right for you.

A low-dose lung cancer screening is recommended if you:

  • Are a current or former smoker who has quit within the past 15 years
  • Are age 50 to 80
  • Have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years (one pack per day for 20 years, two packs per day for 10 years, etc.)

If you do not fit all three of the criteria above, talk to your primary care physician about your concerns.

Risks and Costs

While a lung cancer screening could save your life, there are minimal risks involved. The Lung Center at Hillcrest team will tell you about all the risks and benefits of getting a low-dose CT (computed tomography) scan. They will follow up with you after the initial screening and will review the results and follow up recommendations with you.

You are encouraged to have a conversation with your primary care physician about getting screened for lung cancer. Discuss your complete health history. Ask for a clear explanation about the benefits and risks of being screened.

Medicare and most, but not all, health insurance providers pay for this service. Copays and deductibles apply in some cases. We do offer a flat rate lung screening for $99. Please contact your insurance provider to see if this is a covered benefit with your insurance plan.

Additional Testing

When reviewing the results, physicians look for abnormal growths within the lung called nodules. Lung nodules are very common and many people without cancer have these nodules; however, some nodules can be cancerous, and your doctor may refer you to a pulmonologist for a lung biopsy for further evaluation.

Hillcrest offers leading-edge, minimally invasive technology in lung biopsy through Ion by Intuitive. Ion is a robotic bronchoscopy that allows a physician to use a small, flexible catheter to see all 18 segments in the lung and can even reach far into the outer lung.

The most effective way to prevent lung cancer is to avoid smoking. If you currently smoke, have a conversation with your primary care physician about the best options for you that can help you quit.
